Command Summary Card for Starflight
-----------------------------------
Getting Started.
To play	Starflight, you need a computer with a disk drive, a 
joystick, and three blank,
formatted disks. In addltion to this Command Summary Card, your 
package should
include:

Program Disk
Manual
Security Access Code Wheel
Starmap

Loading Starflight
------------------
Before you do anything, make copies of both sides of the original
Program Disk. You
can use your favorite copy utility or the copy utility provided 
on the Program Disk.

You'll need three blank,formatted disks: two to make a copy of 
the Program Disk and
one to serve as a Save Disk. WARNING! You must have a Save Disk 
in order to play the
game. If you don't have a Save Disk, you won't be able to 
continue. For more on
creating a Save Disk, see step 4 under Loading Starflight.

Formatting Disks
1.Insert a blank disk into the disk drive. Type OPEN 15,8,15,"N0:SAVE,EA"
and press Return. ("0" is the number zero, not the letter "O.")
2.Type CLOSE 15 and press Return.
3.Repeat steps 1 and 2 for each disk you need to format.

Copying the Disk Using the Staiflight Copy Utility
1.Insert Side 1 of the original Program Disk into a dIsk drive, Type LOAD "CP",8,1
and press Return.
2.The computer will ask you to insert the Master Starflight Disk. 
Leave the Program Disk in the drIve and press a key.
3.The computer will ask you to insert the Play Disk, Side 1. Remove
the Program
Disk and insert blank, formatted disk into the drive. Press any key.
4.Follow the onscreen instructions; you'll need to swap disks from 
time to time.
Remove the destination disk and label lt Play Disk, Side 1. (Do 
not write-protect your play Disks.)
5.When the computer is done copying Side 1, you'll be prompted 
to insert the Master Starflight Disk side 2. Insert the disk and
press any key. Repeat steps 3 and 4.
Label this Play Disk, side 2. (Do not write-protect your Play Disks.)

Note: Due to the sensitivity of the C64 disk drive and the large 
amount iniformation
contained on the original disk, it's important that the data 
has been copied correctly. if
you encounter problems while playing the game, make a new set 
of play disks and start a new game.

Loading Starflight
1.Disconnect all perpherals: printer, modem, etc. Plug your 
joystick into port 2.
2.Turn on your monitor, computer, and disk drive.
3.Insert your Play Disk 1 into a disk drive. At the prompt, type 
LOAD"EA",8,1 and
press Return. C128 users: Starflight will autoboot. Just turn on 
your drive, insert Play Dlsk, Side 1, and turn on your computer.
4.Follow the onscreen prompts. Remember that PUSH BUTTON means 
pushing the
joystick button. WARNiNG! if this is the first time you've loaded 
Starflight from
these Play Disks, you must create a Save Disk. if you don't have 
a Save Disk ready the
next time you boot, you won't be able to start the game. To 
create a Save Disk, hold
down the Commodore key and press Return. Press S to save the 
game. You'll need
one blank, formatted disk (label it Save Disk).

Saving Games and Loading Saved Games
To save a game, you need a blank, formatted disk. You need a 
separate Save Disk for each
game you 'want to save. You cannot save a game onto your Play 
Disks.

To load a previously saved game or save the progress in your 
current game, hold down the
Commodore key and press Return. Choose one of the following:

L)OAD GAME  Press L to load a previously saved game. At the 
prompt, insert
your Save Disk into the drive and press the joystick button. 
You'll pick up the
game from the point at which you last saved onto this Save Disk.
S)AVE GAME - Press S to save your current progress in the game. 
At the
prompt, insert your Save Disk into the drive and press the 
joystick button.
Only one game can he saved per Save Disk (though you can have as 
many Save Disks as you lIke). The next time you play; you'll pick up 
from wherever you left off.
C)ONTINUE - Press C to continue your current game without saving.

Movement
--------
Use the joystick to maneuver in hyperspace, move your terrain 
vehicle, and move the small
character in Starport. if you travel long enough in one 
direction, your ship is automatically
set on cruise control - you can center your joystick and the ship 
will continue to travel in
that direction. To stop your ship, change directions or press 
the joystick button.

Selecting Options
-----------------
You run your ship and command your crew by selecting options from 
menus on the screen.
To select, use the joystick to highlight an option and press the 
joystick button to activate.

Security Access Code wheel
YOU MUST ENTER A SECURITY ACCESS CODE when requested by Interstel 
Security
at launch. The access code consists of three variables: a 
location, an artifact, and a race.
Locations are on the rim of the outer wheel; artifacts are on the 
rim of the inner wheel.
Races appear below the cut-out windows on the inner wheel. Use 
the wheel like this:

1)When the request appears on the screen, find the given location 
on the outer
wheel. Line it up with the given artifact on the inner wheel.
2)Without changing the alignment, find the given race on the 
inner wheel. The
correct access code is visible in the window above the race name. 
Type the access code and press Return.

Example: Suppose interstel Security requests the code for 
Akteron, Black Box, Uhlek.
To find the correct access code, line up Akteron with Black Box. 
Look in the window
above Uhlek on the inner wheel. The correct answer in this case 
is 22917.

WARNING! The Gazurtoid are attempting to break Interstel's 
security system! if the
interstei Security request is missing a variabie and you can't 
find the correct access Code
enter your best guess Interstel police will contact you at a 
later date DO NOT HAIL THE
INTERSTEL POLICE. Wait until they hail you If you're unsure 
whether or not a vessel
belongs to the interstel Police, simply scan it. Your Science 
Officer's analysis should reveal
any police vehicle.

Pausing the Game
----------------
You can pause the game by pressing the RUN STOP key. The screen 
border is highlighted
while the game is paused Press the joystick button to resume the
game.

Continuing Messages
-------------------
The game pauses occasionally to let you read messages in the Text 
WINDOW if there's more
of the message to read, the border around the Text Window is 
highlighted; press the joystick button to continue the message.

Additions to the Manual
-----------------------
PART 2: Starport

2.1 Overview:Use the joystick to move the small character to a 
module entryway. The
module's name appears on the screen when the character is before 
the entrance Press the
joystick button to enter.

2.2.3 Personnel: To create a crewmember, push the joystick up 
until an empty file appears
on the screen; select Create. Select the crewmember's species and 
press the joystick button
Now type the crewmember's name and press Return. Once a 
crewmember's file is
displayed, you can Train him, Assign him to one or more posts, or 
Delete him from the crew.

2.2.4 Crew Assignment: In the C64 version, crewmembers are assigned 
to posts in the Personnel module.

2.2.5 Bank: There is no bank in the C64 version.

PART 3 Interstel Superphotonic Starship

3.2.1 Captain: Once you've selected Select Site, use the
joystick to move the crosshairs to the target landing site.

When recommending a planet for colonization, select Log Planet 
and press the joystick
button At the prompt, type its name (whatever you want to Call it)
and press Return.

3.2.3 Navigator: Select Maneuver to travel through hyperspace. To 
exit Maneuver, press the joystick button

3.2.6 Doctor: In the C64 version, your crewmember is automatically
examined during selection for treament.To treat a selected
crewmember, press the joystick button.

PART 4: Space

4.1.2 Star Approach: If you want to find out if a star is stable 
or not enter the star system
and take a Sensor reading. Select Analysis from the Science 
Officer's options - a report on the system appears in the Text
Window.

4.1.3 Planet Approach: To orbit a planet, place your starship 
over the planet's center. When the prompt appears, press the
joystick button.

4.2 Alien Encounters: To scan an alien ship, select Sensors from 
the Science Officer's
options. Place the red crosshair over the alien ship and press 
the joystick button.

To exit an encounter, move away from the alien vessel until the 
message "Leaving Encounter" appears.

4.2.2 Combat: in Combat the joystick button fires your weapons.
To exit Combat press the spacebar.

PART 5: Planetside

In the Commodore version, all Terrain Vehicle functions described 
in the manual are activated using the joystick and joystickbutton.

5.1 Planetfall: DO NOT attempt to land on an alien home planet. 
Most races have a secret weapon that protects their home planet
from invasion. If you destroy a home planet's defense forces, the
secret weapon will be activated and the local star will go supernova.
When this happens, you must restart the game from a saved disk.

5.2.1 Maps: There are two map views: normal and expanded. To switch
to the expanded view, center the joystick and quickly press and
release the joystick button. You can't move shoot, etc., while ln
expanded view. To return to normal view, push the joystick in any
direction. Note: Bad weather can obscure your view in expanded map
view.

5.2.2	Move: Your Terrain Vehicle is always in "Move" mode. To 
re-enter your starship, maneuver the terrain vehicle until it's
over your starship and center the joystick Hold down the joystick
button for a moment and then release.

5.2.3 Cargo: Your Terrain Vehicle Is outfitted with an auto-pickup
device. You can pick up minerals and lifeforms simply by
maneuvering your Terrain Vehicle until it's over the object.
To view the contents of your Cargo and/or jettison 
unwanted items, hold down the joystick button for a moment and
then release.

5.2.4 Look: There ls no Look option in the C64 Version

5.2.5 Scan: There is no Scan option in the C64 version.

5.2.6 Weapons: To fire weapons, move the joystick in the 
direction you want to fire and hold down the joystick button
Release to quit firing. There is no stunner in the C64 version
-only a laser.

5.2.7 Icons: There is no Icons option in the C64 version. Use this
key as a general guide to the colored blocks on the overhead map:

White           Minerals
Blue	        Special (Endurium; ancient ruins; messages, ship)
Red	        Dead or dropped specimen
Orange, Yellow	Lifeform
Purple	        Recent ruins or lifeform
