[These docs are for the disk version of the game. The tape version
does not save the high scores.]

Credits for Docs:
----------------
Original etext from Project 64 Website, which was translated
from German to English before 1998 by Guido Mersmann
<geit@studST.FH-Muenster.DE>, somewhat proofed by Cris Berneburg
<pcgeek@compuserve.com> (who does not know a *lick* of German
despite his German-sounding name), and revised by anonymous
(american) proofer in June and July 2000 with input from another
text found on a D64 image without authorship.

A note from the original etexter:
---------------------------------
"Well the archive contains the english and the german version of
the manual. The german version is an 1:1 copy. The english
version is a translation I did on my own. I hope there aren't
too many errors."

A note from the subsequent anonymous proofer:
--------------------------------------------
The text was very poor in grammar and spelling, and some
meanings as translated were incorrect in the context of their
use so I had to heavily reconstruct such meanings. Certain
described controls were incomplete, inaccurate or outright
incorrect. Gaps in the description were filled with information
found by actually playing the game! The text still contains
guesses and thus I cannot warrant its complete accuracy,
especially for Level 3.

Additional Note for Version 2 (anonymous proofer):
-------------------------------------------------
Another version of the docs was found (anonymous too) and
incorporated to version 1, which appeared at that point (with
the new info) still far from complete and accurate! Since this
other doc was also obscure in some places I still cannot
guarantee that the version below is at last complete and
correct!

SCARABAEUS Manual (reconstructed)

**********************************************

Search a multi-level labyrinth
Find medicine
Seek information
----------------------
Special features:

- superb graphics
- 3D Labyrinth with "SCROLLERAMA"
- Zombies and Ghosts
- complex hieroglyphics
- brilliant 3D elevator operation
- poison and medicine potions
----------------------------------

Note left by previous unsuccessful fortune seeker:
*************************************************
I started my search for SCARABAEUS, the mythic Scarab stone of
the ancient Pharaohs, and went through the deadly portal, only
to be bitten by a poisonous spider! My heart is now less healthy
and I may not live long enough to finish searching the Big
Labyrinth. I may not have enough strength to catch the ghosts and
defeat the zombies. In the labyrinth I must find the hieroglyphic
code to enter the Pharaoh's Tomb, different medicine potions for
my health, and collect zombie traps so that at last I can reach
the SCARABAEUS. Without full health afforded by the potions it
will be questionable whether I can find this code and stay alive.
The last morning I saw seems so long ago, the famous morning when
I stepped down into the dark horror of the Pharaoh's Tomb to find
the great SCARABAEUS.

Note from etexter about intro screen and game layout:
****************************************************
At the main intro you (and your dog) come in a spaceship and
enter a Pharaoh's tomb in a spacesuit (while the dog is naked!).
This intro makes no sense when associated with the game as the
dog never appears in the game and manifestly the spacesuit does
not protect you from spider bites and other mishaps.

Objective
---------
The game has three levels going down in the tomb. The game ends
when you either die or open the crypt on the lowest level, after
gathering key objects and solving puzzles in all three levels.
There is no save game in progress feature, only a pause. You
score by how far and how fast you go into the levels.

Generic Controls
----------------
The game itself is controlled exclusively via joystick.
Plug the joystick in port 2.

There are a few keys for managing the game:

Use M to select between music and sound effects.

Press RUN/STOP to pause and restart the game (only when the
status panel with its heart-beat tape is showing!).

Press H to view at any time the score points for the ongoing
game and the high scores table (at the bottom). Push the
joystick forward to return to the game. (Watch out! This is
NOT a way to pause!)

The score is automatically shown at game end (when you die or
get the SCARABAEUS). If it is a high score it is saved to disk.

Press S to start a new game from game end (and from there only!).

--------------------------------------------
The Main Screen
---------------
On the left is your view of the tomb labyrinth (with a different
color for each level). On the right are the status indicators
(top to bottom):

Heading - Present direction faced vs. north (on the map
north is at the top of the screen)
Levels Side View - Shows current level within the labyrinth
Hourglass - Remaining Time (health goes down with time!)
Animated Man - Your current state of health is shown by the
  & door door raising/lowering (lower/higher health)
A fully open door means you are dead!
Heart-beat tape- Your state of exhaustion (close pulses show
                 exhaustion). WARNING over-exertion kills.

-------------------------------
Level 1: Object - Gather 9 hieroglyphs

They are part of the key needed for the Level 2 search and are
pieces needed for the puzzle presented in Level 3.

The key is displayed by pressing the SPACE BAR. The hieroglyphs
are collected by tracking down and touching ghosts in the maze.
These ghost don't arm you. They are merely moving away from
you.

When the key is complete go to the elevator on the perimeter of
the Labyrinth (south- where you started from) and go down to
Level 2.

Controls for Level 1:
FORWARD - move, enter elevator
BACK - show map
LEFT/RIGHT - turn around
FIRE - show key (also SPACE BAR if more convenient)

---------------------------------------------
Labyrinth Map (Joystick BACK/pulled)
-------------
The map shows different symbols at different levels. The
elevator is always on the map perimeter (bottom or southern
wall). The white U-shaped icon is you.

A skull indicates the location of a ghost, spider or zombie
depending on the level.

In Level 2 the booths with potion symbols and traps are shown,
with a dot identifying their spider. If a booth is shown with
thin lines then you have already visited it. The key pattern
collected in Level 1 appears in Level 2 to the right of the map.

In Level 3 the Pharaoh's crypt and booths for the actual potions
are shown. Under the map are all the phials' symbols/pictures
you noted in Level 2 (no clue is given here whether your choice
was right or wrong!).

---------------------------------------
Using the Elevator
-----------------
To go to another Labyrinth level locate the elevator entrance
by refering to the map. You have to crank the elevator manually
(electricity in a tomb?). When in the elevator push the joystick
forward, then turn the joystick counter-clockwise to reach the
next level (descend). Turn it clockwise to reach the previous
level (ascend). Make sure that you start with the joystick
forward or UP. Don't miss any position! If you let the joystick
pass by its center the elevator falls down past the level you
want and makes your health condition worse!

The elevator color changes from grey stripes to brown/red
(maroon) to indicate that you have reached the level. Don't
release the stick, just press the fire button to exit.

Be sure you are at the desired level! (The color of the
labyrinth tells you immediately.)

---------------------------------------
Level 2: Object - Find 8 medicine symbols and 4 good zombie
traps. Solve the Level 3 separation walls
                  puzzle.

You need to select the medicines symbols in this level to
- survive the spiders found here,
- select the proper phials in Level 3 before going to the gate
of the Pharaoh's crypt, as there you must complete the puzzle
to enter the crypt, and seeing all the pieces of that puzzle
requires perfect health.

You need the traps to catch the zombies inhabiting Level 3.

13 niches (booths) are shown on the map of the Labyrinth, 12 of
which contain each a potion symbol and a trap, while one has a
special puzzle that you must solve to be able to walk through
the separation walls in the labyrinth of Level 3 (in other words
you then get the 'Ankh' or key for the Pharaoh's crypt).

The Spider Hindrance
--------------------
However, a spider is waiting in each booth! So before you can go
in any of the booths you must first get rid of its spider as a
bite is bad for your health (although you don't necessarily die
from it). How to get rid of it: If you merely rush by one of the
booths the spider there will then follow you, and it cannot
hopefully reach you because it is slow moving. At that point you
need to lure it far away into the labyrinth and then rush back
to the booth to give yourself time to examine the hieroglyphs
and make the necessary potion symbols and trap selections before
it returns.

A warning sound will report a returning spider. (In the booth you
don't have access to the map so you cannot follow the spider!).
Your only choice is then to leave the booth and wait at a
location past the booth so the spider reaching its booth again
will settle back in it and leave you alone (then you can restart
the luring process if your examination/choice at the booth was
incomplete).

If a spider bites you (from the back while in the booth) your
health is lowered while the spider hopefully dies.

More than one spider can follow you at the same time, so select
your luring route in the labyrinth such that you do not pass by
another booth while being already followed by a spider!

Potion Symbol/Trap Selection
----------------------------
On the wall of each booth a potion is shown as a phial while
a trap is displayed as a gas mask, and each object has a
20-hieroglyphs clue board to identify whether the object is good
or bad. The key gathered in Level 1 allows you to recognize a
poison symbol and a bad zombie trap: If the 9 hieroglyphs in the
key EXACTLY match (in any order) a 3x3 sized area of the left
(or right) clue board the potion symbol (or trap) is good.

With the joystick choose the pen icon to note the potion as good
(and thus note the symbol of that phial for use in Level 3),
the hand icon to take the trap, or the striked pen or hand icon
to refuse the corresponding object. When the decision is made
IT CAN'T BE CHANGED! The spiral icon is to NOT decide (and you
cannot change this no-choice decision too!).

Notes:
(1) You MUST try to collect all 8 potions and find the 4 good
zombie traps. Without all of them you would depend on a great
luck to get to the SCARABAEUS. Besides, choosing (noting) the
8th medicine correctly kills all spiders automatically, which
allows you to complete Level 2 without further hindrance
(solving the Pharaoh's key puzzle in peace!).
(2) More points will be scored if you decide about all the
objects present on Level 2 (no no-choice selection).
(3) Watch out! If you make a mistake while comparing the symbols,
you may select a bad trap and your health then merely goes down,
but if you take a poison (later in Level 3) from a bad selection
in Level 2 you die immediately! Neither in Level 2 nor in
Level 3 will you be given a feedback on whether you were right
or wrong in the potion symbol choice... until you try!
(4) While in a booth you cannot see the key gathered in Level 1
(since it is with the map, which is inaccessible in the booth),
so you either have to commit it to memory or note it down on
paper in order to make the visual comparisons!

The Separation Walls (the key to the Pharaoh's crypt) Puzzle
------------------------------------------------------------
One of the booths has another kind of puzzle. You will see 12
small slabs ('cartouches') in 3 rows. One side is marked with a
hieroglyph, the other with the 'Ankh' key. Flip the slabs till
they all show the 'Ankh'. The problem is that you cannot flip
the slabs individually! One of the rows, columns or diagonals
can be flipped by moving the red cursor to one of the hand
icons surrounding the set of slabs and pressing the fire button
to flip.

You can leave this booth if you position the cursor on an empty
field and press the fire button.

Controls for Level 2:
FORWARD - move, enter elevator, enter booths
BACK - show map and key (outside booths), leave booth
LEFT/RIGHT - turn around (in booth LEFT/RIGHT select icon)
FIRE - in booths, make selections or flip slabs

-------------------------------------------
Level 3: Object - Take the medicines. Solve the Pharaoh's Crypt
Gate puzzle. Enter the Crypt and get the
                  SCARABAEUS, thereby completing your quest.

This labyrinth is the largest of the tomb. The crypt is in the
center.

Taking the medicines
--------------------
There are 12 booths in the labyrinth hiding phials. 8 of them
contain medicine, the rest is poison.

Go to all the booths. Medicines are in the phials with the same
shape that you noted in Level 2. Move joystick up and down to
select the symbol you want (hand icon to take, spiral icon to
leave). Press fire button to select. Remember, at that point,
if it is a poison you die! (and you then see the end game
screen!)

The Zombies Hindrance
---------------------
Each time you enter a booth, a zombie appears somewhere in the
labyrinth and moves straight towards you. A zombie touching you
lowers your health condition (and you may die if your health is
not that good). You must set the zombie traps at the right
location for each monster to be caught. Press the fire button to
set the traps, one at a time, at your present location. You have
only 4 traps (max) and you cannot pick the traps back, so be
careful in your choice of location!

Hopefully the zombies are coming by the shortest (predictable)
route to your position. You can then guess where they are going
to go and set the traps accordingly. A guess: Maybe visit all
the booths as quickly as you can without making a selection so
that all the zombies show up and you then get a feel where to
put the traps for maximum effect.

Zombies walking across a trap are captured. One trap can catch
several zombies.

The Crypt Gate Puzzle
---------------------
Once you have taken all the medicines, go straight from the
elevator exit to the crypt wall at the center of the labyrinth.
When you reach the wall you are at one of the gates of the
crypt and are presented with the gate puzzle.

You are allowed 40 moves to complete it, and for each move a
chain link appears to lock the gate forever! If you cannot
finish the puzzle of a gate, try again with another (there are
8 gates like that one around the crypt). Note that you cannot
leave a particular gate until the 40 chain links show up (you
failed) or the gate opens (you solved the puzzle). No more
zombies are around so time can be taken to find the layout.
(Although your health still deteriorates slowly with time and
your bonus points evaporate...)

You must move the hieroglyphs in the central four columns such
that these columns exactly match the side columns on the left
and right. The two halves of the solution are completely
visible besides the board if you took all the medicines. In
other words these side columns will be completely visible only
if you have noted correctly all eight medicine symbols in Level
2 and taken them in Level 3 (your vision is then 20/20!). With
each medicine taken you are allowed to see a part of the crypt
gate puzzle goal. The central columns will have all the needed
hieroglyphs if you have collected the entire key in Level 1. If
not you cannot complete the puzzle.

If all slabs are displayed, you'll get to the match for sure.
Without the complete set you will need (great) luck to do this
puzzle and see the gate open.

Move the joystick to the LEFT or RIGHT to highlight a piece,
then pull the joystick while pressing FIRE to move it.

After solving the puzzle the inside of the crypt appears and
thus you have reached the SCARABAEUS.

The score screen is then displayed showing the various points
origin, with a total score. If you made the high scores list
you are asked to enter your name and the new high score list is
saved to disk.

[Note from etexter: There are two versions on the Web, one
saving to sector 18 of track 18 on the disk (the version with
many files), and the other (the version with only two files)
saving to a 1-block file. This last version permits you to
erase the high score list by erasing this file and thus start
anew.]

Controls for Level 3:
FORWARD - move, enter elevator, enter booth or gate area
BACK - show map and phial symbols, leave booth
LEFT/RIGHT - turn around (or highlight hieroglyphs at gate)
FIRE - drop (set) zombie trap, take phial or set
               hieroglyphs

------------------------------------------
Scoring Points
------- -------
Level 1: Each taken hieroglyph - 500
Level 2: Each right selection of medicine or trap - 1000
         Solving the Pharah's key puzzle - 5000

Level 3: Each taken medicine - 10000
Medicine-bonus - depends on health when
                                     taking the last medicine
Time-bonus - depends on the time when
                                     taking the last medicine

Entering the crypt (Getting the SCARABAEUS) - 10000
Pharaoh-Bonus - depends on the time when
                                           entering the crypt

Notes:
(1) The time used for calculating the bonuses of Level 3 is set
from when you touched the ghosts in Level 1. That time accum-
ulates with each touch and decreases from then on. The time used
for Level 3 bonus is also affected by when the Pharaoh's key
puzzle in Level 2 is solved.
(2) You don't have a time limit to complete the game except for
the fact that your health deteriorates steadily with time (watch
the door -of your coffin! - slowly opening on the status board!),
and you must have full health for a sure solving of the puzzle
at the Pharaoh's crypt gate...
