THE JEWELS OF BABYLON
(c)1985 Interceptor Software
Author: (Probably) Richard Dawson (see note below)
-------------------------------------------------

Preliminary Note:
All copies on the Net (July 2000) have their title intro screen
missing. The code for the graphics of this game is identical to
the "Crystals of Carus" code. But since "Crystals" is in BASIC
while "Jewels" is *compiled* BASIC, "Jewels" must be slightly
more recent. Also the switch method to graphics from text screen
appears to be an improvement - in "Crystals" the graphics often
did not match the text. On the face of this I will guess then
that the same crew did this game as for "Crystals" and right
after it, i.e. Richard Dawson did the code, Tim Gibson the music
and Claire Challis the graphics. It also appears that "Jewels"
is the last game produced by Interceptor before they folded...
(because of bad investments by their owner unrelated to
Interceptor!)

EMULATOR USE
In T64 images there are two different versions as the emulators
handle these images differently (CCS64 treats them somewhat
as disks!)

If using CCS64, select the CCS64 T64 image version (Disk Load)
in the drive 8 directory (!). Quick64 front-end does this from
Windows. CCS64 load is practically instantaneous.

If using VICE, select the VICE T64 image version (Tape Load).

THE SETTING
You begin onboard your ship anchored at an island reported as
hiding the long lost Jewels of Babylon. Your mission is to
explore the island facing you and bring the Jewels of Babylon
back to your boat.

STARTING THE GAME
Press any key to get to the text description/prompt screen.

SAVING GAME IN PROGRESS
The original of this game was on tape and you can save the game
to TAPE using the SAVE command. With an emulator, such as the
CCS64, you must set up a TAP file when "PRESS RECORD AND PLAY"
appears, one file per game position - get into the emulator menu
and select "Tape Device 1" then press F2 for Tape status. Don't
forget to stop the recording once saved so that the TAP file is
written to the PC hard disk.

COMMANDS
You can use GET instead of TAKE (at last for Interceptor games!)
Directions can use single letters (N, E, W, S, U, D)
Verbs include CLIMB (DOWN, UP, INTO, OUT OF), SHOUT, SHOOT, DROP,
LIGHT, DRINK, ENTER, PULL, UNLOCK, OPEN, INSERT, ROW (direction)

Lengthy commands:
GIVE (object) TO (animal, person)
THROW (object) AT (animal) - You can also use TO instead of AT.
PLACE (object) ACROSS (something)
MOVE (object) WITH (object)

You also use (I)NVENTORY, SAVE, SCORE and QUIT.

HINTS
* Save your game regularly as you may be killed by natives,
animals or nasty pirates (and other ways)!
* The game is flooded with useless objects to keep you guessing
* Just disregard a second pirate whose blows keep on missing
you! (Maybe rum would help, but is not necessary...)

Note by Anonymous (July 2000): The walkthrough above works, but
it appears to be incomplete as the bottle of rum is never used
and the pirate who keeps missing his blows may need the bottle
of rum to settle down...
