DRAUGHTS by Peter Weighill

OBJECT OF THE GAME

The object of the game is to eliminate all your opponents pieces by jumping over them.

HOW THE PIECES MOVE

The game is played only on the dark squares. The pieces move diagonally to the right or left. You can only move onto an empty square, one square at a time and only forwards. If you reach the other side of the board, your piece becomes a king (represented by a circle in the centre of the piece) and you can now move it either forward or backward.

CAPTURING OPPONENTS PIECES

A capture is made by jumping over an enemy piece which is on a diagonally adjacent square and landing on an empty square immediately beyond. The captured piece is then removed from the board. If the capturing piece can continue to leap over other enemy pieces then it may do so.

END OF GAME

The game ends when either one side has lost all its pieces or where a player cannot move any of his remaining pieces (IE a statemate).

INPUTTING MOVES

This can be done by moving a cursor over the board to choose pieces. The yellow band on the right indicates whose turn it is to go and the move chosen.

MOVING THE CURSOR

The cursor can be moved by either a joystick in port two or the keyboard. The board has letters & numbers around it corresponding to the columns & rows. You can press the letters (A-H) and the numbers (1-8) to move to that column or row.

The joystick can be used to move the cursor up/down & left/right. These functions are also emulated by the keyboard.

Left: SHIFT+CRSR L/R Right: CRSR L/R

Up: SHIFT+CRSR U/D Down: CRSR U/D

To enter a piece, you should press FIRE on the joystick or RETURN on the keyboard. If you make a mistake, you can delete it by pressing the DEL key.

If you do not feel like finshing a game then press Q followed by RETURN to quit

SINGLE MOVE

Position cursor on piece to move and press FIRE. Then position cursor on square to land on and press FIRE.
Press FIRE once more.

TAKING A PIECE / PIECES

Position cursor on piece to move and press FIRE. Then position cursor on square to land on and press FIRE.
If no further pieces can be taken then press FIRE again, otherwise place cursor on next landing positon and press FIRE.

The computer will jump over the first piece then return for continuation of move and allow further pieces to be taken. Follow procedure above, the only difference is that you cannot change the piece to move.
If you mistakenly said that you could jump again when you could not, then you should press DEL and then FIRE or RETURN so that you input the starting position as your ending position.
This will end your turn.

Enjoy the game.
